Welcome to Small Medium Army League, the new organization for Small & Medium sized armies. Currently, the army community may be at its largest since 2021 and with the army community growing and new armies making an entrance, we believe the creation of a Small & Medium army organization is necessary.
For many years the army community has been left without an organization that primarily focusses on S/M armies. S/M armies and major armies compete in the same top ten, the same server map, and the same tournaments. In recent years, to form a separate organization for S/M armies may not have been possible due to the size of the community but it is very much possible now. And perhaps the absence of an S/M organization may have contributed to the lack of armies in the community. CPA org required armies to max a minimum of 10 to register, which is the minimum size of a medium army, even in times when the top armies were averaging sizes in the high 10s and low 20s.
There are hardly any tournaments for S/M armies. There are only 1 day tournaments, a proper tournament with several rounds occur once every few years, compared to SMAC & SMAP era where there were 4 yearly. S/M armies have been forced to compete in the same tournaments as major armies. I wouldn’t say that is a very bad thing as armies get to experience battling larger armies and may even drive small armies to do better, but it may also demotivate armies if they are constantly placed in a tournament with no chance at winning and an S/M army beating a major army is quite rare. They will also need to deal with the large veteran pool major armies have that usually double the size of a major army when in time of tournaments. S/M armies are usually pretty new so they do not have a large vet pool. Major tournaments such as Legends Cup, Christmas Chaos, and March Madness are all designed to force out S/M armies. The seedings are not random. The #1 army on the top ten is placed with the lowest army, the #2 army is placed with the second lowest army, and so on. If the seedings were random, that would give S/M armies a chance to end up in a final, and that would make the tournament less interesting as that would make battles easy to predict. At SMAL, we aim to host 2-3 tournaments yearly for S/M armies where we can see who the top S/M armies are. We believe S/M tournaments will motivate armies as the size gap between armies will be lower and make it easier for all armies to compete and win silverware.
We plan to have a server map only for S/M armies where armies will be battling other armies their own size. An S/M map is very much needed considering smaller armies are usually targeted for land and end up in wars with certain defeat. Major armies will also bully S/M armies which we have seen many times before and have also stepped into S/M conflicts where they have no place. Fear of entering a war with no chance of victory has and will demotivate armies to enter the server map. The SMAL server map will only contain small and medium armies. We aim to innovate the server map and introduce new ideas to make it more active and competitive.
Our top ten’s will be weekly and monthly, and will only cover S/M armies. We aim to have an improved top ten formula in the future, different from the traditional top ten, and will show which army is truly the best.
